Know Your Options
Which Skilled Visa Is Right for You?
There are three main skilled migration pathways in Australia. Each has different requirements, processing times and long-term outcomes. Here is how they compare.
Skilled Independent Visa
Australia's flagship points-tested permanent residency visa. No employer, state sponsor or regional requirement. If your points score is competitive and your occupation is on the relevant list, this is the most direct PR pathway. See how 189 compares to 190 in detail.
- Visa type: Permanent residency
- Sponsor needed: No - fully independent
- Min. points: 65 (invitation cut-offs are often much higher)
- Processing: 6-18 months after invitation
- Work rights: Live and work anywhere in Australia
- Pathway to citizenship: Yes, after 4 years PR
Skilled Nominated Visa
A state or territory government nominates you for permanent residency. In exchange for committing to live and work in that state for at least 2 years, you receive 5 extra points on your EOI - making this ideal for those just below 189 cut-offs.
- Visa type: Permanent residency
- Sponsor needed: Yes - state/territory nomination
- Bonus points: +5 points for nomination
- Processing: 6-18 months after invitation
- Commitment: Live in nominating state for 2 years
- Pathway to citizenship: Yes, after 4 years PR
Skilled Work Regional Visa
A temporary visa designed to bring skilled workers to regional Australia. You receive 15 bonus points and can apply for permanent residency (subclass 191) after 3 years of living and working in a designated regional area. Read the full 491 visa guide.
- Visa type: Temporary (5 years)
- Sponsor needed: State nomination or eligible relative
- Bonus points: +15 points for nomination
- Processing: 6-12 months after invitation
- Requirement: Live and work in regional area
- PR pathway: Subclass 191 after 3 years

The Process
How the SkillSelect EOI Process Works
Skilled visas do not work like a standard application. You submit an Expression of Interest first and wait to be invited. Here is the full process explained step by step.
Get a Skills Assessment
Before anything else, your qualifications and work experience must be assessed by the relevant Australian skills assessing authority for your occupation. This can take 4-16 weeks depending on the body.
Calculate Your Points Score
Using the points test, calculate your total score. Be precise - even 5 extra points can be the difference between receiving an invitation in the next round or waiting months longer.
Submit EOI via SkillSelect
Lodge your Expression of Interest through the Department of Home Affairs SkillSelect system. You can nominate up to 5 occupations and apply for multiple visa subclasses simultaneously.
Wait for an Invitation Round
Home Affairs conducts invitation rounds - the frequency varies. In each round, the highest-scoring candidates in each occupation are invited to apply. There is no fixed schedule.
Receive an Invitation to Apply
If your score is high enough when a round is conducted, you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA). You then have 60 days to lodge the full visa application with all supporting documents.
Lodge the Visa Application
Submit your full application online including police clearances, health examinations, skills assessment, employment evidence, English test results and all identity documents within the 60-day window.
In-Demand Occupations
Occupations Getting Invitations in 2026
Not all occupations receive equal attention in invitation rounds. These sectors are currently seeing strong invitation activity across the 189, 190 and 491 programs.
Technology and IT
Software engineers, cybersecurity analysts, data scientists, cloud architects, DevOps engineers
Healthcare and Nursing
Registered nurses, general practitioners, surgeons, physiotherapists, medical imaging professionals
Construction and Engineering
Civil engineers, structural engineers, project managers, quantity surveyors, electricians
Accounting and Finance
Accountants, auditors, financial analysts, management consultants, tax advisors
Education
Secondary school teachers, early childhood educators, special education teachers, STEM teachers
Trades and Skilled Workers
Plumbers, chefs, bricklayers, carpenters, diesel mechanics - especially for regional 491 pathways
Avoid These
Mistakes That Kill Skilled Visa Applications
These are the most common errors that either prevent people from getting invited or cause their application to fail after invitation.
Wrong Skills Assessing Body
Each occupation has a specific assessing authority. Using the wrong one - even for a closely related role - results in a failed assessment and wasted time and money.
Overclaiming Points
Submitting an EOI with inflated or unsubstantiated points is a serious issue. Home Affairs verifies every claimed point at application stage - discrepancies can lead to refusal or cancellation.
Not Monitoring Invitation Rounds
Many applicants submit their EOI and assume they will be contacted. Invitation cut-offs change every round. Not tracking them means missing chances to update your score before a round closes.
Missing the 60-Day Application Window
Once you receive an Invitation to Apply, you have exactly 60 days to lodge the complete application. Missing this deadline means the invitation lapses and you go back into the pool.
Choosing the Wrong Occupation Code
The ANZSCO occupation code you nominate must precisely match your actual role and skills assessment. A mismatch - even a minor one - can invalidate your entire application. Learn how ANZSCO changes affect your PR chances.
Ignoring the 190 or 491 as a Backup
Many applicants wait indefinitely for a 189 invitation when a 190 or 491 nomination would get them to Australia years faster. Keeping all three options open is almost always the smarter strategy. See which skilled visas offer the best PR opportunities.

Frequently Asked
Skilled Visa Questions We Get Asked Most
The minimum points score required to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) is 65 points. However, submitting with 65 points is rarely enough to receive an invitation. In most occupation pools, invitation cut-offs are between 80 and 110 points depending on demand. The higher your score, the faster you are likely to receive an invitation.
Processing times after receiving an Invitation to Apply vary. For subclass 189 and 190, you can generally expect 6-18 months for a decision once the full application is lodged. The 491 visa typically processes in 6-12 months. These times depend heavily on your individual circumstances, document completeness, and health and character checks.
Yes. Your partner and dependent children can be included as secondary applicants on your skilled visa application. They will be assessed for health and character requirements. If your partner also meets the skills and English requirements they can contribute additional points to your application score.
A skills assessment is a formal evaluation of your qualifications and work experience by a designated Australian assessing authority. It confirms that your background meets Australian standards in your nominated occupation. The points test is a separate scoring system used by Home Affairs to rank EOI applicants. You need both - a positive skills assessment is a prerequisite to submitting an EOI.
It depends on your specific situation - your points score, occupation, state of residence and how quickly you want to reach permanent residency. The 189 is the most flexible but hardest to get an invitation for. The 190 adds 5 points but requires a 2-year commitment to a state. The 491 adds 15 points and gets you to Australia faster but requires 3 years in a regional area before PR. In most cases, applying for all three simultaneously gives you the best chance.
Yes. Being in Australia on a temporary visa - student, graduate, or 482 work visa - does not prevent you from lodging an EOI and applying for a skilled visa. In fact, having Australian work experience significantly boosts your points score. You can continue living and working in Australia while your skilled visa application is being processed.
