Your age and English
Together these are worth up to 50 of the points available, so they matter more than anything else.
Age is assessed at the date of invitation, not the date you lodge your EOI. If you are close to a birthday that crosses a bracket, model both.
Test scores are valid for three years. Competent English is the minimum to be eligible, but it scores nothing.
Skilled work experience
Only work in your nominated occupation, or a closely related one at the same skill level, counts. Within the last 10 years.
Australian experience scores higher than overseas experience at every level. The two are added together, then capped at 20 points combined.
Education and bonuses
Pick your highest qualification only. These do not stack.
Partner status
This is worth up to 10 points and is the factor people most often get wrong.
Being single scores the same 10 points as having a skilled partner. A partner who does not meet the skilled criteria can actively cost you points compared with applying alone.

Combined cap: 20 points. Overseas and Australian experience are added together and then capped, so 15 plus 20 gives 20, not 35.

What this calculator does not tell you
65 points is a floor, not a target
- 65 is the minimum score to be eligible for an invitation. It is not the score that gets invited.
- Invitation rounds are competitive and the effective cut-off varies by occupation. Popular occupations have regularly required scores well above 65.
- This tool does not predict your chance of invitation, because that depends on the pool and on how many places are available for your occupation.
Points are not eligibility
- Your occupation must be on the list relevant to the visa you are applying for.
- You need a positive skills assessment from the correct assessing authority.
- For 190 and 491 you need a state or territory to actually nominate you, and their criteria are separate from and often stricter than the points test.
- Health, character and other requirements sit outside the points test entirely.
About the proposed 2026 reform
- The Department has published a discussion paper on reforming the points test. As at September 2026 nothing has been legislated and no change has taken effect.
- This calculator uses the points currently in force. If the reform proceeds, the figures here will need updating.
