Engineering Graduate on a 485: The Points-Tested Route Before You Chase a 482
You Probably Do Not Need a CDR.
If you have spent any time researching this, you have met the Competency Demonstration Report. Three career episodes, a summary statement, a continuing professional development record, and an entire industry of services offering to help you write it.
If your employer is also talking about a 482, that is a conversation to have deliberately rather than by default. Engineering is one of the areas where you have a genuine choice between the employer route and the points-tested route, which a lot of occupations do not, and the first question is not which to pick but whether your qualification already carries you most of the way through the assessment.
Accreditation Applies to a Program, Not an Individual.
Engineers Australia offers four pathways for accredited qualifications: the Australian qualification pathway, and the Washington, Sydney and Dublin Accord pathways. The Competency Demonstration Report pathway is for qualifications that are provisionally accredited, not accredited, or differently titled.
Engineers Australia puts it plainly on its own site: a graduate of a fully accredited program is treated as having met the Stage 1 competencies for the relevant occupational category.
Why So Much of What You Have Read Is Aimed Elsewhere
A CDR takes weeks to months to compile and the assessment costs more. That makes it the profitable part of the market, and the volume of content reflects that rather than reflecting what most Australian graduates need.
Before you buy anything, check whether your own program is on the accredited list. It is free to check and it is the first question, not the last.
The Condition That Catches People
There is a requirement attached to the Australian qualification pathway that is easy to miss, and it is not about you.
Your Program Has to Be Accredited by Engineers Australia, and You Must Have Started It in or After the Year Accreditation Commenced.
So a program that gained accreditation after you enrolled may not cover you, even though the same program covers the student who started a year later.
- Check the program, not the institution. A well known university can have accredited and unaccredited engineering programs side by side, and the accreditation is attached to the specific program.
- Check the year. If your program was accredited while you were partway through it, this is a question to resolve before you lodge rather than after.
If Your Qualification Is an Advanced Diploma or an Associate Degree
Since 1 September 2024, only qualifications accredited by Engineers Australia are eligible for assessment under that pathway. If you hold one of those and started before the change, check where you stand before you plan anything.
Send Us Your Degree Details Before You Buy a CDR Service.
Send us your degree, the university and program name, the year you started, and when your 485 expires. We will tell you which Engineers Australia pathway applies to you, whether you need a CDR, and whether the points-tested route is realistic in your timeframe. If the honest answer is that you should take the sponsorship, we will say so.
Which Category Your Degree Puts You In
The pathway you use also determines the occupational category you are assessed in, and the category is the occupation you nominate.
| Accord | Qualification level | Occupational category |
|---|---|---|
| Washington Accord | Four year engineering degree | Professional Engineer |
| Sydney Accord | Engineering technologist qualification | Engineering Technologist |
| Dublin Accord | Engineering associate qualification | Engineering Associate |
About the Engineering Technologist Category
People worry about landing in the Engineering Technologist category rather than a named professional engineering occupation, on the assumption that it is a weaker route. For migration purposes that assumption is largely wrong.
Engineering Technologist, ANZSCO 233914, and professional engineering occupations such as Mechanical Engineer, 233512, both appear on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List with access to the same visa subclasses. The difference is in assessment and in how you present yourself to employers and states, not in whether the points-tested routes are open to you.
Your Occupation Is Probably on Both Lists
Engineering is one of the areas where you genuinely have a choice, which a lot of occupations do not.
| List | What it opens |
|---|---|
| MLTSSL | The points-tested routes: the 189, the 190 and the 491 |
| CSOL | The employer routes: the 482 Core Skills stream and the 186 Direct Entry stream |
Both Mechanical Engineer and Engineering Technologist appear on both lists. So an employer offering you a 482 is offering you one of two available routes rather than the only one. If that is your situation, the comparison is at employer 482 or state nomination, how to decide, and the short version is that you often do not have to choose.
Timing, and What Your 485 Is Actually For
The sequence is the usual one and the first step is the long one.
- Confirm your program accreditation and the year it commenced.
- Lodge the Engineers Australia migration skills assessment under the pathway that applies to you.
- Work out your points, including Australian study and work experience.
- Lodge an expression of interest, and a state registration of interest if you are going that way.
Engineers Australia Says Standard Applications Generally Take Around 15 Weeks to Be Assigned to an Assessor.
That is the queue before assessment, not the time to an outcome, which depends on your documents and whether further information is requested.
If your 485 has eighteen months left, that is comfortable. If it has six, start this week, because nothing downstream can begin until the assessment exists.
The 485 is the best position you will be in for this. Work rights, time, and Australian work experience in your nominated occupation, which carries points and is what states tend to look for. Spending it waiting for an employer to decide is the expensive option.

The State Picture, Honestly
This is where engineering gets genuinely complicated and where we are not going to pretend otherwise.
How States Actually Treat Engineering
States treat engineering occupations very differently from one another. Some publish a separate occupation list and name specific engineering codes on it. Some accept national list occupations and then rank applicants themselves. Some concentrate on particular sectors, such as resources and energy, or renewables, building services and defence, and prioritise the engineering disciplines that serve them. Some waive requirements for offshore applicants in priority categories.
What that means in practice is that your discipline matters as much as your occupation code. A civil engineer and a mechanical engineer with identical points can have very different prospects in the same state in the same year.
It also means any article that tells you which states are nominating engineers is out of date the moment a program year turns over, including ours. Check the state sites directly. Our page on quotas and how nomination works is at Australian state nomination quotas and PR chances.
When the 482 Is Still the Better Call
- Your points are not competitive and will not become competitive soon. Engineering is one of the more competitive occupation groups and the minimum does not get you invited.
- Your program is not accredited and the CDR is genuinely in front of you. That adds months, and if your visa is short the employer route may simply be faster.
- You are already doing good work for an employer who wants to keep you, in a discipline the states are not currently prioritising.
- You need certainty of outcome more than you need independence. A nomination is a process with a defined end. An expression of interest is a queue.
What to Do This Week
- Look up your specific program on the Engineers Australia accredited programs list, and note the year accreditation commenced for it.
- Work out which occupational category your qualification maps to, and which ANZSCO code you will nominate.
- If your program is accredited and you started in or after the accreditation year, do not buy CDR services. Lodge under the qualification pathway.
- Check current fees and processing times with Engineers Australia rather than from any article.
- Count backwards from your 485 expiry through the assessment queue and decide whether the timeline works.
- Keep working in your discipline. Australian experience in the nominated occupation is both points and the thing states look at.
- If an employer has offered a 482, read the comparison before you sign anything.
For the wider question of which occupations can reach permanent residence without an employer, our hub is at can you immigrate to Australia without a job offer. If you are a graduate in another profession, the lawyers and accountants pathway page is at best visa pathway for lawyers, accountants and graduates.
