Can I Apply for a Second 485 Visa if I Studied in Regional Australia, and Who Actually Qualifies?
Most explanations of the second 485 say it gives you one or two extra years depending on your regional category. That is true and it is not enough to work out whether you qualify, because there are two location tests and they are assessed separately.
Where You Studied and Where You Lived Are Assessed Separately. The Combination Decides Both Eligibility and Duration.
Where You Studied
Where You Lived on Your First 485
The most common way people lose this is not failing the study test. It is graduating from a regional university and then moving to Sydney or Melbourne. That single decision rules you out entirely, regardless of where you studied.
The Short Version
You need a higher education qualification from an institution in a designated regional area, you must have held a Post-Higher Education Work, Post-Study Work or Replacement stream 485, and you must have lived in a designated regional area while holding it. Living in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane during that period rules you out completely. Duration is one or two extra years depending on the combination of categories, with a Tasmania exception. It must be lodged while your current 485 is still valid, and it is considerably cheaper than a first 485.
Studied Regionally? Check Your Postcodes Against the Matrix Before Spending Anything on This Application.
Whether both your study campus and your residence during your first 485 fall inside a designated regional area, which category each is in, and whether the exception applies to you, all turn on your specific postcodes. A migration professional can settle it before an application is prepared.
The First Question: Which Stream Was Your Original 485?
This is the gate most articles skip, and it excludes a large group before anything else is considered.
The Second Stream Is Only Available to Holders of the Higher Education Streams.
Those first three are the higher education streams, built on a bachelor degree or above.
If your first 485 was under the Post-Vocational Education Work stream, which covers diploma and trade qualifications, the second 485 is not available to you. There is no equivalent second stream for vocational graduates.
That is worth establishing before you spend time on postcodes.
If your original grant notice does not name the stream clearly, our guide on the 485 application streams and requirements covers the distinctions and where they appear on the notice.
The Matrix Nobody Prints
Two locations, assessed separately, with the shorter outcome applying where they differ.
| Where You Lived on Your First 485 | Where You Studied | Result | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Category 2 | Category 2 or Category 3 | 1 extra year | The most common outcome |
| Category 3 | Category 2 | 1 extra year | Living more remotely does not help if you studied in a city |
| Category 3 | Category 3 | 2 extra years | The maximum available |
| Category 1 | Anywhere | Not eligible | Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane rule you out entirely |
Category 2 covers cities and major regional centres, including Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, the Gold Coast, Newcastle, Wollongong and similar. Category 3 covers regional centres and other regional areas, meaning smaller and more remote locations. Category 1 is Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
Where you have moved between categories during the relevant period, the shorter outcome generally applies. Short absences for a holiday or a work trip do not change your usual place of residence.
Both Residence and Study in Tasmania Gives Two Years Even From Category 2 Residence.
That is the one place where the ordinary matrix does not apply, and it is worth knowing if Tasmania is anywhere in your history. If both your residence and your study location were in Tasmania, you can be granted two years even where your residence was only in a Category 2 area.
Checking Your Own Postcodes Properly
Category is decided by postcode, not by how regional a place feels, and two mistakes are common.
The Two Mistakes That Cost People Their Eligibility
Assuming a regional campus of a metropolitan institution counts. What matters is the location of the campus you actually studied at, so verify the postcode of that campus rather than the university head office.
Assuming a large city cannot be regional. Perth and Adelaide are Category 2. People discount themselves unnecessarily.
Check both postcodes against the Department current designated regional areas list. The study postcode comes from your campus, the residence postcode from where you actually lived while holding your first 485. Have evidence for both.
The Deadline That Catches People
This is the must-know timing point and it is the reason this article exists in the cluster.
The Second 485 Must Be Applied for While You Still Hold Your Current 485.
Once it expires, the option is gone permanently. There is no grace period and no way to apply afterwards.
Lodging while your current visa is valid also secures a bridging visa, which keeps you lawful and working while the application is decided. Processing is not instant, so leaving it to the final weeks means gambling on a decision arriving before your visa ends, which is not necessary if you lodge earlier.
What It Costs, and Why That Matters
The second stream carries its own application charge, and it is substantially lower than a first 485. Given the primary 485 charge rose to AUD 5,750 from 1 July 2026, the difference is significant.
Confirm your own figure using the Department Visa Pricing Estimator rather than any article, including this one, since charges are set by stream and change without much notice.
The practical point is that for an eligible person this is the cheapest way to buy one or two more years onshore. Compared with a fresh application for anything else, or with the cost of a refused application, it is the low risk option and it should be checked first.
What the Extra Time Is Actually For
The second 485 is not a destination. It is runway, and it is worth deciding now what you intend to do with it.
| Use | Why the Extra Time Helps |
|---|---|
| Employer sponsorship | The 482 requires one year of relevant experience within the past five, reduced from two years in December 2024. An extra year or two makes this considerably more reachable, and there is no points test on that route. |
| State nomination | Regional residence and regional work experience are weighted by several state programs, and you are already accumulating both. Our overview of state nomination quotas and PR chances is the starting point. |
| The 491 | Fifteen points for state, territory or eligible family nomination, and you are already living in a designated regional area, which is the commitment the visa asks for. See the 491 pathway guide and the fifteen point argument in context. |
| Points building | Additional skilled employment, a better English result or a partner skills assessment all take time you would otherwise not have. |
One Caution Worth Naming
Time spent outside Australia does not extend the visa period, so extended travel eats into the runway you have just bought. If you intend to use the second 485 for PR groundwork, treat it as time in Australia rather than time on the passport.
If You Do Not Qualify
The honest position is that this is decided by choices already made. Where you studied and where you lived are in the past and cannot be adjusted now.
If you are ruled out, the second 485 is simply not part of your plan and the useful thing is to know that quickly rather than spend weeks on it. The routes that remain are employer sponsorship, state nomination, the 491, a partner visa where one is genuinely available, or a lawful departure before your current visa expires.
If You Are Still on Your First 485 and Reading This Early
You Are in the Best Position of Anyone Reading This Page.
Where you live for the rest of your first 485 determines whether this option exists for you. Moving to Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane ends it.
If a second 485 is something you want, that is a decision to make deliberately now rather than discover later. The trap this article exists to name catches people who did not know they were making a decision at all.
What to Do This Week
- Confirm which stream your first 485 was granted under. If it was the Post-Vocational Education Work stream, this option is not available and you can stop here.
- Find the postcode of the campus where you actually studied, and check it against the Department designated regional areas list.
- Find the postcodes of where you have lived while holding your first 485, and check those too.
- Use the matrix above to work out whether you are eligible and for how long.
- Check your current 485 expiry date on VEVO. The application must be lodged before it.
- Gather residence evidence now: bank statements, utility bills, tenancy agreements, employment records. This is the part that takes longest.
- Run your details through the Visa Pricing Estimator so you know the real cost.
- If you are eligible, lodge early rather than close to expiry, so that a bridging visa covers you while it is decided.
